Long-distance routes

The Elbe Cycling Path is the largest and most important long-distance cycle route in the region. But there are also other paths that invite the cyclist to take longer tours through the VVO region. The long-distance paths are well paved, well kept routes that usually lead through flat or hilly countryside.

River Elbe Cycling Path

The River Elbe Cycling Path goes along the entire River Elbe, from the source in the Riesengebirge in the Czech Republic all the way to where it empties into the North Sea near Cuxhaven.

The River Elbe Cycling Path can roughly be subdivided into four sections:

  • The source of the River Elbe – Schöna
  • Schöna – Dessau
  • Dessau – Wittenberge
  • Wittenberge – Cuxhaven

The section from the source of the river up to Schöna goes through the Czech Republic. The next section from Schöna to Dessau goes through the VVO region up until just behind Riesa.

Frog Cycle Route

The Froschradweg (Frog Cycle Route) is an approx 260 km long circular route that goes through the northern Oberlausitz region. About one-third of it is in the VVO region around Kamenz, Hoyerswerda and Wittichenau. The route takes its name from the fact that it goes mainly through moor and heath areas with numerous ponds and so through areas with lots of frogs.

In addition to the wonderful landscape, the Froschradweg also offers cultural highlights. Along the way the cyclist can discover the world of the Sorbs or visit historic castles and parks.

Further long-distance cycling routes

There are other interesting cycling paths that, for example, lead through the Elbsandsteingebirge. ADFC, the German cyclists association, offers a full programme of one day excursions or trips of several days.
