Mountain biking
Where there are mountains, there are mountain bikers. Saxon Switzerland and the Osterzgebirge are big attractions for all mountain bikers. You can find interesting tips for biking excursions here.
A very special tip for mountain bikers:
The “TransOst-Tour” goes from Sebnitz into the Riesengebirge. The first part of the journey goes through Saxon Switzerland.
Saxon Switzerland
The Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) national park has what is referred to as a Wegegebot (Rule of Pathways). This means that cycling is only allowed on routes that have been especially marked as cycling routes. Cycling is not allowed on hiking paths.
Various tour operators offer guided tours through the Elbsandsteingebirge. You can choose between short tours, half-day tours or day-long tours to various destinations.
Osterzgebirge
The Osterzgebirge also offer marked trails especially for cyclists. Professionally skilled cyclists train in the State Sport Centre in Altenberg.
Good news for marathon cyclists: Modelled on the “Trans Alp” there will be a new stage race in 2007 that will go through the German “Mittelgebirge” – the low range mountains in the middle of Germany. In 2007 Seiffen will be the finish line for the run, in the following years the Erzgebirge will alternate as starting point or finish.
