Marathon and co.
If you are into running, then the VVO region has many interesting offers for you. For those who like to run out in the country there is the Oberelbe Marathon, whereas city runners will enjoy the Dresden Marathon. And if you like steep inclines, why not take part in the “Plattleitenlauf” or the “Spitzhaustreppenlauf”.
Oberelbe Marathon
The Oberelbe Marathon takes place every spring, three weeks before the “Rennsteiglauf” ultramarathon. The thing that is really special about the Oberelbe Marathon is the beautiful landscape of Saxon Switzerland that accompanies the runners on their way. The run goes from Königstein to Dresden. It is also possible to just do a part of the run (half marathon, 10 km run, mini marathon).
The Oberelbe Marathon is officially sponsored by the VVO.
Morgenpost Dresden Marathon
The Dresden Marathon is an annual event that takes place on the second-last Sunday in October. The route for the marathon goes through Dresden’s old city, past the “Großer Garten” and along the River Elbe meadows. The marathon starts on Ostra Allee near the “Zwinger”. The finish line is at the Congress Center Dresden. Runners can either do the entire marathon, a half marathon or a 10k run.
Spitzhaustreppenlauf Radebeul
Do you know the steep stairs in Radebeul that go up the vineyard hills to the Spitzhaus building? If you do then you know the challenge awaiting the participants of the Spitzhaus stair run, where the participants run up these very stairs! The run is an annual event that takes place in the fall.
Froschlauf (frog run)
“Don’t be a frog!“ This German expression – which means “Don’t chicken out” – is the motto for a run which invites all nature and running enthusiasts to run around the frog ponds located to the north-east of Biehla (near Kamenz). The “Frog Run” always takes place on an evening in June so that you can hear a multitude of frogs during the run. The route is 9.6 km long and is also suitable for beginners and those who do not yet have that much practice in running.
