Lusatia

Lausitzer Seenland – Knappensee

Between lakeland and heath

The Lusatian Lake District is one of Germany's most newly discovered holiday areas. Around 60 kilometres from Dresden, you will find Europe's largest
man-made lakeland landscape.

The Dresden Heath Bend is an almost continuous green swathe of heathlands which stretches from Dresden to Ruhland (Brandenburg). Both regions offer plentiful options for enjoyable outings, bike rides and rambling, as well as cultural discoveries.

One ticket. Travel on everything.

You don't have to worry about how to get there and back. We will show you how best to do it. Just jump on. A standard tariff applies to local trains, the S-Bahn, trams, buses and almost every ferry.

The transport association – VVO association area

The VVO area is divided into 21 tariff zones. Whichever form of transport you use, and however often you get on and off, the prices you pay are based on these zones. When you travel, you simply count the number of zones you will pass through.

To the Lusatian Lakes by bus & rail

RegionalExpress (DB)

From Dresden, you can get to Hoyerswerda by train lines RE 15 and RE 18/RE 11 (change at Ruhland). The RE 15 takes you straight from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Hoyerswerda via Großenhain and Ruhland. As an alternative to the RE 15, which runs directly to the lakeland area, you can combine the RE 18 with the S 4. The S 4 belongs to the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland, and takes passengers from Leipzig to Hoyerswerda via Torgau, Elsterwerda and Ruhland.

Access to these areas is well-developed with train connections from Dresden to Königsbrück (RB 33) and Kamenz (RB 34).

Taking cycles and the bike bus

With its well-signposted, themed cycle trail network (Froggy Cycle Route, Gherkin Cycle Route, etc.), Upper Lusatia is the ideal place to ride a bike. The quiet lanes in the lakeland areas between Bautzen and Hoyerswerda are perfect for lovely, interesting bike rides. In this former opencast mining area, what used to be industrial trails have been asphalted and turned into excellent, scenic trails around the lakes.

Providing there is space, you can take your bike on buses and trains.

The best ticket for your bicycle

If you wish to take your bicycle on bus & rail or the bike bus, just buy a cycle day ticket. The price is based on the tariff zones in which you intend to travel:

  • To travel in one tariff zone you need the price level 1 cycle day ticket, costing 2 Euro.
  • To travel in two or more tariff zones, buy the cycle day ticket for the entire VVO area, costing 3 Euro.

The cycle day ticket is valid up to 4am on the day following the day of stamping.
